Guanacaste real estate attracts thousands of foreign buyers each year
Guanacaste real estate is particularly in demand within the Costa Rica property market.
Guanacaste (the “gold coast”) is the warm and beautiful northwest coastal region of Costa Rica. Guanacaste boasts a range of spectacular scenery that includes rolling hills, long white sand beaches, and lushly forested volcanic peaks. It also has a distinct cultural heritage and is famous for its horses, cowboys, and bullfights.
Guanacaste’s climate is hotter and drier than in the rest of Costa Rica, with a long dry season tempered by refreshing winds, followed by a short but lush green season. The Guanacaste region is beloved by surfers, tourists, and adventurers – and by foreign buyers seeking a prime piece of Guanacaste real estate for a second or retirement home.
Besides the climate, Guanacaste real estate is highly sought-after for the following reasons:
- Excellent direct travel connections to North America. A new international airport opened three years ago in Liberia, the capital of Guanacaste. Over forty non-stop flights arrive at the Liberia airport each week, including flights from Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Newark, Minneapolis, Oakland, Los Angeles, Miami, and Toronto. There are also frequent domestic flights within Costa Rica.
- Spectacular, uncrowded beaches. Most beaches in the Guanacaste region are safe for swimming and many have excellent waves for surfing.
- Availability of goods and services. The Guanacaste region has more shops, restaurants, goods and services than any other area in Costa Rica except the capital of San Jose.
- Anticipated influx of more upscale visitors and buyers. A much-anticipated major luxury marina will be going in at Flamingo Beach, one of Guanacaste’s major resort towns, within the next two years. In addition, 10 five-star hotels have announced that they plan to buy Guanacaste real estate and build luxury resorts along the coast. JW Marriott and Hyatt have recently purchased prime beachfront locations and will begin construction soon.
